Spring 2014 Newsletter
From the Chairman
The Winter Bulletin of the National Dahlia Society reported on the dwindling number of exhibitors at most shows. This may be due to a number of factors such as costs, reduced space in gardens and the many other distractions available to modern life. In the past whole communities would be involved in local activities like flower shows and it is with this in mind that we would urge all our members to exhibit something in our Summer Show. This will take place on Saturday 9th August at St. Nicholas Church Centre Bedhampton.
One of our most prolific exhibitors has now moved on to new interests (we wish him well for the future and thank him for all of his past involvements) so we will need an increased effort from everyone to make up for this. Please phone the Show Manager, Liam Hutchings for the day on (02392) 475150 or The Show Secretary, Geoff Tanton on (02392) 479419 for schedules, information or fliers and try to find something that you could exhibit, even if you have never done so before, all contributions gratefully received!!
This will take place on Wednesday 28th May at the United Reformed Church Hall, Elm Lane, Havant. The committee has decided to make a change from the usual Fish & Chips menu and make this an American Supper instead. This means that everyone that comes brings something to eat, which will make it much more interesting and unusual.
To prevent everyone bringing the same things, or all puddings and no mains, Biddy Wylie will coordinate the event. Please contact her at the next meeting, or phone her on (02392) 475226 to book your place and say what you would like to bring (for those with little time or culinary expertise there are plenty of ready-made items out there).
We will provide tea and coffee, but feel free to bring your own preferred tipple. This is also an opportunity to exchange gardening tips and ideas, so we would like you to find an item to share with everyone. This is a new venture for us and we want to make it a success, so please come along if you can.
This Wednesday 30th April at the United Reformed Church Hall, Elm Lane, Havant at 7.30pm. Steve Peach will give a talk on ‘A Rangers Life at Queen Elizabeth Country Park’, which should be very interesting. It would be nice if we could keep up the good attendance that we have had at our recent talks.
Waitrose Green Token Scheme
As you probably known, Waitrose has a monthly scheme whereby customers vote for local Community projects by using their green tokens. We were lucky enough to be chosen as one of the organisations for the month of November and we came second!!
This meant we received a cheque for £290, which will go towards funding of our activities. A letter of appreciation was sent and will be displayed on the staff/partners notice board.
Farewell and Welcome
At the last A.G.M. we saw Viv Costall receive a farewell bouquet of flowers in gratitude for her many years of service at the Society in a multiplicity of roles. Her place on the committee has been taken by Diana Towler, who will take charge of book keeping, so welcome to Diana and thank you for coming forward.
Floral Arrangement Theme for the Summer Show
August 2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and this is the theme for the floral arrangement class at our Summer Show. This class is open to members of the public who are not members (though we would encourage to join!) and the fliers have been produced inviting entries for this section for distribution to any organisation that might be interested. Please let us know of anyone who you think this might apply to, telephone numbers are on the first page in the chairman section of the newsletter.
We have lost a Steward from the Langstone area, who does not want to continue after many years carrying out this service for which many thanks. Is there anyone in the area that could take over? It involves delivering newsletters and collecting subscriptions. If you feel that you could do this please contact Biddy Wylie, you can find her phone number on the first page in the May Supper section.
