Spring 2013 Newsletter

From the Chairman
This being the first newsletter of the year, I cannot fail to comment on such an unseasonal weather pattern, going back to the high level of rainfall last year and then into 2013 with weeks of what felt like new ice age!

I am hoping by the time this newsletter is circulated spring will have arrived. If I may, I would like to repeat some advice from gardening programmes, lack of moisture is not going to be a problem, but the ground surface in open gardens will be somewhat compacted and will need teasing out.

Help the ground to warm up by using cloches or spreading old carpets or blankets over particular areas. Otherwise, if you are tired of waiting for nature and have protected corners then decorate these spaces with pots of primulas and polyanthus fresh from the garden centres.

Finally, a reminder that the summer show has been booked for Saturday 3rd Augustmore on this to follow.

Tribute to Gwen Burroughs 1926-2013
We were all saddened at the news of Gwen’s passing in February. She took the entrance fees at the January meeting as usual, a role she fulfilled over many years, and appeared to be in good health so her passing was very unexpected.

She was our store manager and for many years until its closure and was an exhibitor at all our shows, as well as being a member of the committee. We have lost a real stalwart, who contributed to the society to the end.

May Supper
The usual Fish & Chip supper will be held on Wednesday 20th May in the usual venue at 7.15 for 7.30. Tickets will be available at the April talk or from Viv Costall on (02392) 453138, price £6.00

Next Meeting
The last meeting of the season is on Wednesday 24th April at the usual venue. Gerald Pointing will give a talk on ‘A Hampshire Calendar’ which includes the seasons, seasonal changes and customs throughout the ages. This promises to be a very interesting talk, so please try to attend, especially as the evenings are lighter now!

Help Needed
A gentleman living in central Havant would like help with his garden and house plants. He has been widowed recently and would like someone to do the horticultural things that his wife used to do. If interested, please contact Liam Hutchings on (02392) 475140. Payment terms by arrangement.
